After a 103-day break that felt much longer for Lexington’s comedy crowd, Ian Sethi’s Wednesday Open Mic has officially returned — and the laughs are hitting harder than ever. Now hosted at Shamrocks, the show’s new home, Ian’s mic has reemerged with fresh energy, new faces, and the same electric chaos that made it a midweek must-see for comics and fans alike.
A Mic Built from Pure Passion
The story of Ian’s open mic isn’t just about jokes — it’s about hustle. He started the show at the hotel restaurant where he worked, running the mic simply because he loved comedy and wanted to give others a place to perform, but mostly because he wanted to cross “perform a comedy set” off his bucket list. When his boss said the only way to bring a mic there was if he hosted, he had no idea he was agreeing to changing his life as he knew it. What began as a “let’s see what happens” experiment quickly became a weekly institution, with comics, servers, and regulars all rallying behind it.
Between serving tables by day and introducing comics by night, Ian built something rare — a genuine comedy community in the middle of the week.
Change Must Be Embraced
The journey to this point hasn’t been without its plot twists. Ian’s first venue, while initially supportive, fell short on a few promises — leading to a professional but unfortunate parting of ways. Undeterred, he moved the mic to another local spot, where it thrived for months until that venue ran into some behind-the-scenes issues during an ownership change and ultimately shut down.
But through it all, Ian didn’t stop. He didn’t let Lexington’s Wednesday night tradition die out. He adapted, kept the comics together, and made sure the city’s open mic scene stayed alive and well.
The Shamrocks Era Begins
Now, the open mic has found new life at Shamrocks, and the relaunch was nothing short of a homecoming — even if it’s technically a new stage. Nearly 30 comics hit the mic on opening night, bringing a mix of fresh material, crowd energy, and the kind of spontaneous comedy that can only happen when everyone’s thrilled just to be back.
Ian’s hosting style ties the whole thing together — loud, captivating, and hard to ignore. He balances keeping the show running smoothly with giving comics and crowds permission to be as weird and wild as they want to be.
The Guy Who Kept It Going
Since his first hosting gig in the fall of 2024, Ian Sethi has been the throughline for Lexington’s open mic comedy scene. He’s built, rebuilt, and reinvented a night that most cities would be lucky to have once. His passion for stand-up — and for the people who make it happen — shows up every week in the energy of the room.
And now, with a new home and a full roster of eager comics, Ian’s Wednesday mic isn’t just back. It’s better.
Because in Lexington, when Wednesday night rolls around, everyone knows where the laughs are happening — wherever Ian Sethi plugs in the mic.
